Las Américas Film Festival : “Tesis sobre una domesticación”

During Pride Weekend in The Hague, we will screen two films in collaboration with Filmhuis Den Haag.
On May 16, 2025, we screen “Tesis sobre una domesticación” (2024) by Javier van de Couter, an Argentine film based on a trans story from a novel.
After this film there will be a panel discussion led by Alejandra Ortiz, with Verna Juliette and Cleo Murti as guest speakers.
On May 17, 2025, we will screen “Ato Noturno” (2025) by Marcio Reolon and Filipe Matzembacher, a beautiful Brazilian queer film, in collaboration with IQMF.

About the speakers
Julian Isenia was born on Curaçao, lives in The Hague, and works as an assistant professor in anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. Their work revolves around archives, queerness, and gender-nonconforming the Caribbean and its diaspora.
Verna Juliette, a biologist, sees the world as uniquely life-rich, making “human rights/environmental advocate” titles unnecessary—life’s inherent value guides her. At Big Pharma by day, she educates on justice through diverse platforms. With a science background, she critiques systems she’s navigated: migration, asylum, education, and privilege. Unimpressed by big-name accolades, she focuses on present action. Here, now, she shares this moment.
Cleo Murti is an Indonesian-Egyptian fashion designer who sought refuge in the Netherlands in 2018, fleeing LGBTQIA+ persecution. With 16 years of experience running her own fashion business in Indonesia, she now channels her creativity into activism as the founder of Transsisters—a collective that empowers trans communities through clothing and mutual support.
Though new to living openly as a trans woman, she navigates both acceptance and rejection with resilience. “This journey is mine,” she says. “I choose to walk it with joy.
